    Martina Steer teaches modern Jewish and European history. She received her M.A. from the University of Munich in 1999 and her PhD from the University of Vienna in 2002. Before joining the history department of the University of Vienna, she was a visiting professor at the European University Institute in Florence, a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, at the German Historical Institute in Washington, at the University of Wrocław and at the Simon Dubnow Institute in Leipzig. She is also a professorial lecturer at the School of International Studies in Vienna and a faculty member of the research center Borderland Society: Past and Present at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, L'viv. 

    She was the recipient of several fellowships by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (APART), the Austrian Forschungsgemeinschaft, the German Historical Institute Washington, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German National Foundation, the Axel Springer Foundation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. 

    Currently she is at work on a book project titled Memory transnational. The Moses Mendelssohn Jubilees in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

    She is the author of Bertha Badt- Strauss. Eine jüdische Publizistin (Frankfurt/Main: Campus 2005) and "Da zeigte sich, der Mann hatte ihr keine Welt mehr anzubieten." Margarete Susman und die Frage der Frauenemanzipation (Bochum: Winkler, 2001). Together with Wolfgang Schmale she edited Kulturtransfer in der Jüdischen Geschichte (Frankfurt/Main: Campus, 2006)
