Abstract: The structures of the Bavarian church province in the 8 th Century experienced severe change through the victory of Charlemagne over the Avars and the appointment of Salzburg to an arch-diocese. While Salzburg took the task of the Christian mission to the Slavs in the Carantanian area and further on diocese Passau had to christianize the Danube area. Through the Moravian Principality, the Slavic apostles Constantine/Cyril and Methodius from Byzantium came to the newly founded Bishopric Nitra (nowadays in Slovakia), who tried to introduce a Slavic rite. The conflict with the Bavarian bishops escalated in the captivity of Bishop Methodius; the changing political circumstances in favour of the Moravians stopped Bavarian endeavours. The article illustrates the structures of this development and also tries to elaborate on the mental and cultural-political controversies in the course of this troubled contiguity, especially on the basis of the Alemannic bishop Ermenrich of Passau, who obviously was not fond of the Slavic rite.
